King David Primary Sandton
Once upon a time, a young teacher named Hazel Bolnick, was approached by some parents who had moved into a new developing area called Gallo Manor. They wanted her to leave King David Linksfield Primary and start a very new school called King David Sandton. She was a very special and talented teacher who was kind and loving to all the children she taught. Her excellent qualities were just what was needed to lead a brand new school and encourage more parents who were living in or planning to move to the area to come to the school.
Those somewhat primitive conditions under which we started brought a dimension to our school which set it apart from any other school around. The informal atmosphere of those early days, created a family ethos which our school has never lost, and which we strive to maintain. Our Jewish school has become an extension of a Jewish home and because of this we have been able to realise the dream of a community learning institution in which all the children have been allowed to revel in Yiddishkeit as it played as significant a role as academic and sporting achievement. This was to be a school in which the children would be taught and constantly reminded of their rich heritage and maintaining its traditions King David Primary School in Sandton is a Jewish primary school for Grade R to Grade 7 situated in the quiet Sandton suburb of Woodmead. The school features: two fully equipped computer labs; media resource centre including a Library and Audio-visual centre; Israel centre; and a Science laboratory. Our state of the art sport facilities encompass amongst other things a 25 m swimming-pool, four all-weather tennis courts, three all-weather netball courts and playing fields, all with covered stands and seating areas.
As a Jewish school, and part of the South African Board of Jewish Educators, we encourage a Zionistic curiosity to build and entrench an understanding of our Jewish roots and our beloved homeland within a warm and nurturing educational environment.
Our pupils spend many lunch hours in our lush and beautiful gardens and these peaceful surroundings also encourage amazing creativity when the children use these gardens for group and project work.
Culturally, our art room and music centre are the hub of Jewish ideology. Potential is encouraged and nurtured and annual exhibitions and concerts reveal the wealth of talent we have in our school.
Recently, we completed the new entrance to the school - a simple yet magnificent feature which, with its functionality and attractiveness, opens on to a view of our school, reminding us of Israel by day with its Jerusalem-like stone and fountains, or by night with its subtle lighting and inviting ambience. It is a magical entrance to a unique and special environment called King David Sandton.
